the first work on the hostel wall was done by Richard Batty, a young Londoner who has been traveling recently through the Middle East and made some great works of art while he was here in Cairo
RICHARD BATTY Richard Batty, London 1981
Richard Batty is a young London artists, whose vibrant, colourful art reflects the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic fabric of life in his immediate surroundings.
His artistic creations of paintings, photography and sculpture form a mesh of styles, subjects and contradictions and are an attempt to make sense of the chaos and harmony influencing his daily life. Richard projects a great sense of humour onto the canvas in an attempt ‘to unite people of all ages and intellects’.
Influenced by ‘Fantastic Art’ and steeped in the philosophy of Hieronymus Bosch, whose works ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ or the macabre devils, freaks and monsters form the essence of Richard Batty’s ‘Urban Architecture’ the result of a lengthy research project on Social Geography, exploring the relationship between architecture, space, drugs and sex.

One of the many advantages of traveling is the feeling of inspiration that is generated by travel experiences. Different travellers have many ways of expressing their travel experiences; some write, some take a photo, others make a drawing or painting while some even write or compose songs and plays. Working in a hostel for nearly five years now, I’ve seen all kinds of art work done that has been inspired by travel.
I though it such a loss that the extravagant work created by travelers, inspired artistically by their travels, is not shared among other travelers. The maximum exposure this art gets is from a few travel blogs that not many people visit, and those who do might only experience the art from their computer screen.
As I run a hostel full of travellers i thought why not use the walls of the hostel to show some of this great work done by travellers to other travellers.
I’m on the beginning of my project titled Travel Colours which I have been thinking about for a while and now I’m almost ten days away from realizing the first step of it. I hope this is an idea that will soon be copied and spread to other hostels in Egypt and other countries.
